Most renewable energy technologies are still too expensive to pay for themselves in terms of energy savings alone, although they will contribute to reducing carbon emissions. As an incentive to make these technologies more attractive to install, the Government has introduced a system of payments for the green energy generated. These are FIT's (Feed in Tariffs) for producing green electricity and RHI's (Renewable Heat Incentives) for generating heat from renewable sources. These have the effect of making the use of renewable technologies a good investment, while also resulting in (usually) small savings for the household.
It is usually the case that using local installation companies will be considerably cheaper than those who advertise nationally. In many cases local installers have much more experience and won't try and do a 'hard sell'.
